Postwar Multidisciplinary Thoracic Surgery
1935 - 1961
During the period 1935-1961, thoracic surgery matured as an interdisciplinary field, driven by reconstruction and replacement techniques for intrathoracic airways, advances in vascular and aortic surgery, and emerging frameworks for oncologic thoracic procedures. The era emphasized systematic lung cancer management, perioperative physiology, and robust integration of anesthesia, perioperative care, and intraoperative physiology to enable complex procedures. A cross-disciplinary emphasis on cardiothoracic techniques broadened the scope to include mitral and aortic valve pathologies, congenital heart disease, and emergent intraoperative management, establishing standardized approaches to thoracic reconstruction and hemorrhagic/airway complications.
• Reconstruction and replacement of intrathoracic airways—trachea and esophagus—and early microsurgical–reconstructive approaches in thoracic surgery.
• Vascular and aortic surgery within thoracic domain: repair of coarctation, aneurysm management, homografts, and use of extracorporeal circulation—reflecting cross-disciplinary cardiothoracic techniques.
• Lung cancer surgery and perioperative physiology: surgical management of carcinoma of the lung, postoperative chylothorax insights, and pulmonary circulation/ventilation relations after pneumonectomy.
• Cardiovascular-heart disease within thoracic surgery: mitral stenosis, aortic stenosis, congenital heart disease—expanding scope of thoracic surgical care.
• Interdisciplinary perioperative management and anesthesia integration across thoracic interventions: perioperative care, anesthesia contexts, and emergency/intraoperative physiology.
